About the Journal

Focus and scope

Revista Cultura y Religión publishes research and studies on cultures and religions from various disciplines. Works are welcome from perspectives such as: the secular, gender, ethnicity, ecological, dialogue, tolerance, respect and diversity in the context of the sacred and spiritualities.

The aim of the journal is to generate a space for dialogue, reflection and exchange on contemporary religious identities and cultures.

The journal receives unpublished papers which will be evaluated by a multidisciplinary international editorial team, supported by a double-blind peer review. The Editorial Team is the guarantor that the articles published comply with best academic practices and conform to the ethical values that sustain the journal, which are: scientific rigor, originality, secularism and respect for diversity.

The journal is published as a continuous edition, with an annual volume, and includes works in Spanish, Portuguese and English. It is published in open access mode, under the Creative Commons CC BY License.

Revista Cultura y Religión is published by Universidad Arturo Prat, a non-profit public entity located in Chile.

Peer evaluation process

Articles submitted must comply with the basic requirements of the publication standards (APA Style), which are mandatory at the time of submission. Failure to comply with these standards will result in the articles not being sent for evaluation but rather returned to their authors.

1 Firstly, the editorial team together with the journal's management will determine the admissibility of an article, i.e., if it complies with the general requirements described in the AUTHOR GUIDELINES of the journal, and may reject an article without the need to send it to external reviewers if it is considered that it does not comply with the standards or is not tailored to the objectives and editorial line of the journal.

2 All articles received will be sent to two anonymous evaluators, who are external to our University, and specialized in the topic of the work. This is known as "double blind", maintaining in confidentiality both the author(s) and the evaluators. These evaluators may: a) accept the article as it is, b) accept it subject to modifications or c) reject it. In case there is no unanimity in the evaluations about accepting the article (as it is or subject to modifications) or rejecting it, the Editorial Team, taking into consideration the evaluations, will decide whether to reject it or send it to a third evaluator.

3 The comments and suggestions of the evaluators will be sent to the author(s) through an assigned editor so that they may proceed with any requested corrections and modifications of the text, which will be conditional to its publication. The author or authors will have two weeks to make the changes from the date the evaluations are sent (or a longer period if the editor deems it convenient). Once the correction process is completed, the author(s) must send the editor the final version of their article for publication, and will be notified that said article has passed the evaluation process and is awaiting publication.

4 Following the process of correction and modification of the original text, the journal reserves the right to make, prior to publication, minor modifications to the manuscript, which in no case will change the content or central ideas of the text. These modifications refer to formal aspects such as spelling corrections, clarification of the wording or any other type of aspect associated with style and/or design criteria.

The author(s) will be informed of the acceptance or rejection of the article within a maximum period of six months (including the text for publication in case of acceptance), as from the date of receipt of the article.

Background to the journal

Revista Cultura y Religión is a journal that was first published in 2007, and in which different researchers from Latin America have collaborated and published, as well as those authors who have worked on religious issues in the Latin American continent. However, it has gradually expanded to other territorial realities where religious studies, the sacred and spiritualities are also significant, as is the case of Spain.

In addition to including the works of experienced authors, our journal is characterized by offering a space to new young researchers, along with promoting the presence of female researchers in our publications, thus creating spaces of equality. Thanks to this, we have managed to position ourselves as one of the most relevant journals on the study of religion, the sacred and spiritualities in Latin America, and with a projection to other continents, as well as to other countries in Central America and the Caribbean.

Initially associated with the Isluga Institute of the Universidad Arturo Prat, since 2010 to date, it forms part of the Institute of International Studies of the same university.

Publication Frequency

Revista Cultura y Religión is published as a continuous edition, with an annual volume, published by the Institute for International Studies (INTE) at Universidad Arturo Prat. The volumes (I and II) are published in late June and December, respectively.

Journal History

Revista Cultura & Religión began in 2007 and has featured the collaboration and publications of various Latin American researchers as well as authors who have worked on religions in the Latin American continent. It has gradually expanded its scope to include other territorial realities in which studies of religion, the sacred and spiritualities are also important, as in the case of Spain.

In addition to featuring established authors, our journal provides space for young researchers and promotes the presence of researchers in our publications, thus creating spaces of equality. This has allowed us to position ourselves as one of the most important journals on studies of religion, the sacred and spiritualities in Latin America with projection to other continents as well as other countries in Central America and the Caribbean.

Initially associated with Instituto Isluga at Universidad Arturo Prat, it has been part of the university’s Institute for International Studies since 2010.
