This article aims to discuss the involvement of Christian churches in the Peruvian social upheaval (late 2022-2023). To compensate for the loss of credibility in the fragmented and polarized political field, politicians seek legitimacy in the religious sphere. In the Catholic and evangelical religious fields, fragmentation and polarization also prevail, but for different reasons, weakening their capacity for action. However, the (extreme) right-wing currents manage to occupy a prominent place in both fields due to their cohesion, populism, alliance between certain politicians and religious leaders, transnational connections, and their moral and authoritarian agenda. We argue that Catholics in this current mimic evangelical political behavior. We approach the study of the interaction between the political and religious fields based on news events reported in the press and publications on the official pages of religious entities.
