Drawing upon a case study of a public school in the city of Juiz de Fora in the state of Minas Gerais, this paper discusses the presence of the Catholic religion in the public and state-owned
space in Brazil. Based on the empirical observation of Catholic religious symbols, and a calendar of religious dates incorporated by this public school, the paper seeks to make a
historical journey of the public presence of the Catholic Church and its dissemination in the nation´s cultural and symbolic environment. Theoretically exploring the notions of
"permanence" and "naturalization", it attempts to explain the “permanence of long duration" of Catholicism in the state and public spheres of the country.
