Este trabajo surge de la preocupación por una cierta vacancia teórica. Si bien el problema del cruce entre la religión y la política ha sido profundamente tratado desde disciplinas como la filosofía política, no puede decirse lo mismo respecto a la sociología. Nuestro objetivo en el presente trabajo será entonces traer al presente los aportes teóricos de ciertos autores canónicos de la disciplina sociológica, específicamente de los pertenecientes a la tradición francesa de pensamiento. Nos haremos eco de Émile Durkheim, Maurice Halbwachs y Pierre Bourdieu, así como de aquellos autores que los ponen en debate actualmente, para intentar construir una herramienta conceptual útil para la investigación en el área que aquí nos preocupa. Nuestro punto de partida es el de la presencia de elementos religiosos en la práctica política, y consideramos que dichos elementos son la representación ritual, la construcción de memoria y la manipulación simbólica.
