El enfrentamiento armado que sufrió Guatemala entre 1960 y 1996 supuso un episodio de consecuencias profundas en el seno de la población del país. El colectivo maya fue uno de los sectores más golpeados por la dilatada violencia. En este hostil contexto, la Iglesia Católica adquirió un papel fundamental en el apoyo a la población, el desarrollo del movimiento indígena y la materialización de los Acuerdos de Paz. Tras el primer apoyo de la Iglesia a los regímenes totalitarios, se produjo un cambio de actitud por parte de un importante sector de ésta que muchos han tildado de “giro hacia la izquierda”. En este contexto, la sucesión de rígidos gobiernos militares reprimió la actuación de ciertos grupos eclesiales presuntamente identificados con los elementos subversivos. Por otro lado, el miedo social contenido provocó un éxodo parcial de católicos hacia otros credos afines o bien vistos socialmente.Downloads
