Memoria y relaciones sociales, Estado, legitimaciónAbstract
We attempt to illustrate through case-analysis the obstacles involved in the construction onthe part of he State of a hegemonic memory in post-dictatorial Argentina. The struggles forthe meaning of the dramatic history of the latter dictatorship are still ongoing, and we are farfrom a shared position around its treatment and overcoming. It has been subjected to diversepractices of remembrance by former supporters that held administrative positions, as well asinstitutions belonging to the armed and security forces, but always with support fromnumerous social groups. We argue that memory is not only a question of remembrance of thepast, but that the “past” in question informs particular social relationships in the present. Wealso discuss Bourdieu’s portrayal of the State as the holder of “legitimate monopoly ofsymbolic force”.
