Uno de los tópicos recurrentes de la sociología de la religión actual, en referencia a la religión institucional u orientada hacia las iglesias, alude a un proceso de “creer sin pertenecer”. El concepto se ha popularizado notablemente y hoy en día conforma parte del léxico socio-religioso, así como aconteció antes con los conceptos de “secularización”, “pluralismo”, “sincretismo”, “nuevos movimientos religiosos” y más actualmente “mercado religioso”. La autora responsable de este concepto es Grace Davie, profesora de sociología en las universidades de Exeter y Uppsala y una de las principales exponentes de la sociología de la religión contemporánea, quien lo formuló en su obra Religion in Britain since 1945.
