Abstract

The text results from a research about religious spaces that exist in public institutions in the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil. It follows the controversy that arose around the board of
a public hospital's proposal, which was to transform a Catholic chapel into a “space of spirituality”. The reference in the midst of this controversy to the experiences of construction of other ecumenical or multi-faith spaces in the same city, provides an
expanded overview, which includes two hospitals, a shopping mall, and the city airport. In seeking to understand the arguments and projects in these situations, the analysis
intends to discuss the notion of secularism, demonstrating the variety of understandings and configurations about it.
