Abstract

In this article I seek to describe and analyze the debates and the confrontations, which have occurred through Brazilian’s history as a result of the inclusion of God’s name in the
preamble of Federal constitution. The invocation of God’s name, which appears in almost all Brazilian Federal Constitutions, is one of the main reasons brought forward to justify and legitimate the presence of the religious in the public space. As it will be seen further, this controversy reveals the divergence of positioning about the relations between State and Religion. This also expresses different conceptions about the role and the place of religion in the legal and in brazilian constitution system and in the own social life and politics.
