Las Ciencias Sociales y el estudio de la religión en México

En México la historia social de la nación no se entiende sin atender el papel que la religión católica ha tenido en ella, aun cuando ésta fue por muchos años desconocida de la historia oficial e incluso de la historiografía académica (Del Arenal 2002). Esta ausencia se explica porque en México se vivieron episodios de tensión e incluso de conflicto armado entre un Estado laico --con tintes jacobinos y anticlericales-- y una Iglesia católica con pretensiones integralistas que, además de saberse mayoritaria y presente en la cultura festiva de los mexicanos, ha intentado en varias ocasiones imponerese en los asuntos socio-políticos del país.
